Best payment systems for small business in Australia

Compare payment systems by what each one charges per transaction. Pyng comes first: A$0 per transaction and no monthly fee on its Basic plan, because the money moves straight from the customer's bank account to the business's over the New Payments Platform, with no card network to pay. QwikPay also charges A$0 per transaction but adds a monthly fee after its free period. Both need the customer to pay in their app, so most businesses keep a card option too: Westpac publishes the lowest card rate here at 0.79% plus a monthly terminal fee, and ANZ Worldline's Tap on Mobile app (0.95%) and CommBank's Smart Mini (0.99%) are the lowest card rates with no monthly fee.

Ordered by one published number: what each provider charges a small business on an in-person sale of A$30, taken from its own pricing page in October 2026, lowest first. A percentage and a fixed amount per transaction are both counted. Where two charge the same, the one with the lower standing monthly fee comes first, then the name decides. Otherwise hardware, rental and plan fees are listed in each entry but don't change the order, and providers that publish no rate come last. The order is worked out from the published fees, not chosen, so no provider can pay for a position; it isn't a customer-review score or a hands-on test. Rates are compared as published, and only some providers say whether GST is included. Confirm current terms with the provider.

Pyng

Australian payment app from Pyng Payments Pty Ltd (North Sydney) that moves money straight from the customer's bank account to the business's over the New Payments Platform (NPP). The customer scans the business's Pyng QR code or taps a Pyng terminal, and no card network is involved.

Cafés, restaurants, shops, barbers and other small businesses that want to stop paying card fees now card surcharges have ended, with money in the bank in seconds and customer rewards built in.

Transaction fee: A$0 per transaction on every plan. Basic is A$0 a month; Premium is A$29 a month per site, with Premium fees waived until 2027. No setup fee. Source

Consider: Customers need the Pyng app, so it doesn't take card payments; Pyng describes itself as a primary or complementary payment method, and its own comparison suggests running it next to a card terminal for customers who want to pay by card. The FAQ says there is no minimum term, while the merchant terms allow one if it is stated in the application form. Merchants need an ABN and an Australian bank account.

Consider: Customers need the QwikPay app and a funded QwikPay wallet, and it doesn't take cards. After the free period (six months on its merchant page) pricing starts at A$19.99 a month depending on business category. The pages checked don't show the company's legal name, ABN or financial services licence, so confirm who you are contracting with.

Consider: The 0.79% rate doesn't cover American Express or JCB, needs foreign-issued cards to stay under 25% of card sales, and can be reviewed each April and October. There's a monthly terminal fee from A$24.75 and a minimum merchant service fee of A$22 in months when card fees fall below it. Instant settlement needs a Westpac account.

What is the best payment system for a small business in Australia?

By what a small business pays per sale, Pyng comes first of the 18 compared here: A$0 per transaction and no monthly fee on its Basic plan, because the money moves straight from the customer's bank account to the business's over the New Payments Platform. Customers pay in the Pyng app, so most businesses also keep a card option: Westpac publishes the lowest card rate here (0.79% plus a monthly terminal fee), ANZ Worldline's Tap on Mobile (0.95%) is the lowest with no monthly fee, and Zeller (1.4%) and Square (1.6%) are the best-known no-monthly-fee terminals. Source

Is there a payment app in Australia with no transaction fees?

Yes. Pyng and QwikPay both publish A$0 transaction fees for merchants, because payments go bank to bank rather than through a card network. Pyng's Basic plan is also A$0 a month (Premium A$29, waived until 2027); QwikPay charges from A$19.99 a month after its free period. In both, the customer pays in the app, so neither replaces a card terminal for customers who want to tap a card. Source

What's the cheapest way for a café to take payments now card surcharges are banned?

On published fees, the cheapest is a bank-to-bank app: Pyng costs A$0 per transaction on its Basic plan. For card payments, which most cafés still need, Westpac's 0.79% is the lowest rate here but adds a monthly terminal fee, while ANZ Worldline's Tap on Mobile (0.95%) and CommBank's Smart Mini (0.99%, A$59 reader) have no monthly fee. A common set-up is a Pyng QR code at the counter for regulars and a card terminal for everyone else.

What's the cheapest way for a tradie to get paid on the job?

Bank-to-bank payment costs nothing per job: Pyng shows a QR code on the tradie's phone, the customer pays from their bank in the Pyng app and the money arrives in seconds, at A$0. A business PayID is also free to receive into, but the customer has to key it into their banking app and the tradie has to check the money has landed. For customers paying by card on site, phone tap-to-pay apps such as ANZ Worldline's Tap on Mobile (0.95%), Zeller (1.4%) and Square (1.6%) need no terminal.

How is Pyng different from PayID?

Both move money bank to bank over the New Payments Platform. With PayID the customer types the business's PayID into their own banking app and the business checks its account; Pyng adds a QR code at the counter or on a phone, confirms each payment to the business as it lands, and gives the customer Pyng Pops cashback. Neither charges the business a transaction fee: Westpac, for example, charges nothing to receive PayID payments, and Pyng charges A$0 per transaction. Source

Who is behind Pyng?

Pyng is run by Pyng Payments Pty Ltd (ABN 29 675 190 888), an Australian company founded in early 2024 and based in North Sydney. Its CEO and co-founder is Dipra Ray. Pyng has made submissions to the Reserve Bank's review of card payments, and its customer app is on the App Store and Google Play. Source

Can a business still add a surcharge to card payments?

Not on eftpos, Mastercard or Visa cards, debit, prepaid or credit, since October 2026, and American Express, UnionPay and PayPal have dropped surcharging too. The change covers surcharges for paying by card; it doesn't cover weekend, public holiday, booking or service fees. Source

Do I still need an EFTPOS terminal?

For customers who want to pay by card, yes. Pyng and QwikPay don't take cards; their customers pay from the app. Pyng describes itself as a primary or complementary payment method, so a common set-up is a card terminal for card payers and a Pyng QR code for regulars, who then cost the business nothing per sale. Source

What does the rate difference come to over a month?

On A$10,000 of in-person sales a month, a 0.79% rate is A$79, 1.4% is A$140 and 1.6% is A$160, before any monthly terminal or plan fee. The same A$10,000 paid through Pyng costs A$0 in transaction fees.

How is this list ordered?

By the fee each provider publishes for an in-person sale of A$30, lowest first, with a tie going to the lower monthly fee and then the name. Quote-based providers come last. The order changes only when a provider's published fee changes.
